Peter Benoit stimulated a renaissance of Flemish music. Despite the cultural dominance of French in Belgian society, he composed beautiful choral works in Flemish. Many of his compositions were performed for large audiences during open-air concerts. This unconventional thinker also played a role in the founding of various Antwerp art institutions that continue to characterize the cultural life of the city today. Benoit's extensive and timeless oeuvre spans numerous genres, from religious music in Latin to monumental oratorios in the vernacular. As a proud ambassador of Benoit's music, the Symfonieorkest Antwerpen demonstrates with this cd-box the ultimate tribute to the spiritual father of Flemish music. It contains a collection of his greatest masterworks, performed live with an international cast of soloists, choirs and conductors.
