Saverio Mercadante was one of the pioneers of Italian instrumental music in the first half of the 19th century, a period dominated by opera. His quartets for flute and strings demonstrate his willingness to develop and experiment in this genre, and this selection illustrates his mastery of both the quartet forms 'Quatuor brillant' and 'Quatuor concertant'. Technical finger dexterity, a varied use of tone colours and harmonic richness characterize these very different and individual works. These world premieres are based on the latest critical editions by Mariateresa Dellaborra. Flutist Mario Carbotta has collaborated worldwide with important artists and has premiered various works by contemporary Italian composers. Violist Mario Hossen is internationally recognized as one of the leading interpreters of Niccolò Paganini. Violinist Marta Potulska is one of the founders of the Paganini Ensemble Wien, with which she has recorded all 15 quartets by Nicolò Paganini. Cellist Liliana Kehayova is a member of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, but also performs regularly as a soloist with various orchestras.
