The violist and violist Christine Wu, winner of the CD Recording Prize with Outhere Music during the first Berlin Prize for Young Artists, explores on her new album "Recollection(s)" for Channel Classics Records the relationship between time and memory. On the violin she performs Saariaho's Nocturne, in which memories attempt to break through the boundlessness of time; Bach's Chaconne, whose recurring harmonic structure evokes a sense of awe, hope and transcendence; and Jeffrey Mumford's "eight musings … revisiting memories", a reinterpretation of musical fragments from earlier works. On the viola she presents Joan Tower's "Wild Purple" and Weinberg's Sonata for viola no. 2 op. 123, in which recurring rhythmic cells have the fragmented nature of remembering as their theme; as well as Stravinsky's Elegie, which makes logically successive memory processes audible.
