The history of the Royal Danish Orchestra goes back to 1448. This makes it the oldest orchestra in the world and Carl Nielsen is one of the important former members. His 16 years of experience as second violinist of the orchestra shaped him as a composer and it was this ensemble that introduced his symphonies to the world. From the "threatening storm of genius" of the First Symphony to the disarming strangeness of the Sixth, Nielsen's symphonies rank among the most important in their genre. They can be heard here in recordings made with a series of conductors whose connection to Denmark and Nielsen's music is unparalleled.
