Astor Piazzolla was just over thirty when he traveled to France to study composition with Nadia Boulanger at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau. Her lessons had a great influence on his music. While Piazzolla strived to perfect his classical writing, Boulanger encouraged him to stay true to his roots in tango - she advised him not to abandon his identity, but to elevate and refine it. The album of the ensemble L'Acheron celebrates the meeting between these two personalities by interweaving their respective musical worlds: Piazzolla's Argentine heritage from Carlos Gardel to Alberto Ginastera and Boulanger's French influences, in particular Gabriel Fauré and Lili Boulanger, supplemented by her fondness for early music. The works are performed by a consort of viols, complemented by a bandoneon. The dialogue between classical works and pieces from Piazzolla's Parisian period revives this extraordinary exchange: unexpected, magical and unique.
