Symphonien Nr.3 & 8

This third volume of the complete symphonies of Ferdinand Ries contains two magnificent works written at the peak of the composer's creative period, when the influence of his composition teacher Beethoven on his symphonic music had diminished.

The Symphony in E flat major, WoO 30, sometimes called Symphony No. 8, was probably Ries' fifth symphony in chronological terms. Although it had a successful premiere in London and shows the influence of Rossini's popular style, Ries found it difficult to find a publisher for his work after his return to Germany in 1824. It was only published in the 1830s.

Ries' Symphony No. 3, Op. 90 - also in E flat major - had its premiere in London in 1815. Although less dramatic than his early symphonies, this work stands out for its extensive solo passages, which are most clearly expressed in the third movement, a minuet with solo violin and solo clarinet.
