Symphony No. 3

Also in his Third Symphony, Jan van Gilse (1881 – 1944) stands firmly in the tradition of late Romanticism. Passion, beauty and drama: that is what this work from 1907 is about. Van Gilse conducted the Dutch premiere in 1909 with the Concertgebouworkest. During Van Gilse's lifetime, the Third Symphony (with soprano solos on texts from the Song of Songs) was performed only seven times and fell into oblivion after his death. Unjustly so, as this recording shows. The Nederlands Symfonieorkest and David Porcelijn had previously recorded the First and Second Symphony for the CPO label.
