Symphony No. 4

Jan van Gilse's Fourth Symphony (1881 -1944) wird his most frequently performed work. In this accessible and late-Romantic work from 1915, Van Gilse makes heard in a highly personal manner what he has in common with composers such as Brahms, Mahler and Richard Strauss. The composer himself conducted the world premiere with the Concertgebouworkest. Also on this CD: Van Gilse's nearly forgotten Concert Overture from 1900 and his Funeral Music on the death of Tijl Uilenspiegel. The Nederlands Symfonieorkest and David Porcelijn previously recorded Van Gilse's First, Second and Third Symphonies for the label CPO.
