The Kingdom (1906) is probably Elgar's least known choral work. It has a balanced mix of lyrical sections and stunning dramatic passages. Thanks to the masterful orchestral treatment, it can rightfully be placed alongside Elgar's other remarkable vocal works. For conductor David Temple it is a jewel from the first to the last note and the immediately infectious enthusiasm of the SIGNUM CLASSICS recording will certainly bring this wrongly neglected work new friends in this country as well.
