The Road is an almost nine-hour cycle that Frederic Rzewski (1938-2021) composed between 1995 and 2003 as a "novel for piano". It combines storytelling, improvisation, political reflection and virtuosity in 65 pieces. With allusions ranging from jazz and folk to Tolstoy and Gogol, Rzewski creates a musical journey that is as unpredictable as life itself. Daan Vandewalle was a close artistic companion of Rzewski and the commissioner of many of his works. His interpretation is characterized by many years of exchange with him.
