The Tempest

With this release, the Göteborg Symfonieorkest under Santtu-Matias Rouvali concludes his Sibelius symphony cycle. The first recordings in this series were already awarded numerous international prizes and reach their culmination here with three of Sibelius' most important symphonies: Andrew Mellor writes in his introduction that "the music is propelled by forms of gravitational energy, comparable to the force that determines the course of a river". Rouvali has also recorded eight fragments from Sibelius' incidental music for Shakespeare's "The Tempest". The work, which premiered in March 1926, is one of Sibelius' last orchestral works and certainly his most fascinating theater composition.
