Violin Sonatas

After the success of his Bach sonatas and partitas and equal praise for his recording of Walther's Scherzi da violino, Bojan Čičić now turns his attention to the collection of sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber from 1681 – one of the most ambitious and inventive violin works from the seventeenth century. By employing unorthodox tunings and bold harmonic inventions, Biber expands the possibilities of the instrument. His improvisatory style, layered textures and complex counterpoint demand from the player not only virtuosic technical genius, but also a keen sense of affect and sonority. With his Illyria Consort, Čičić brings clarity and depth to this music and reveals the rich interplay between intellect, devotion and instrumental theatre in the sonatas.
