The Christmas story has inspired countless composers throughout the centuries. The mystery surrounding the birth, the stable, the angels and the shepherds form a lively scene that has been depicted musically in various ways, sometimes lavishly with trumpets and timpani - think of Bach's Weihnachtsoratorium - and sometimes, as on this recording, in an intimate atmosphere. The works are by composers from the German tradition before Bach: Buxtehude, Weckmann, Lübeck, Bernhard, Schmelzer and Praetorius, whose motets are based on Lutheran chorale melodies.
