With Affection

Nina Kotova's latest album bears the fitting title "With Affection" and offers an inviting journey through a number of excellent cello works close to her heart. The programme begins with the Cello Sonata by Shostakovich, a work that combines classical form with simplicity and clarity, and continues with the Cello Sonata by Debussy, which by contrast is fleeting and atmospheric. In addition, Nina Kotova plays the rarely heard Adagio by Shostakovich from the ballet "The Bright Stream" Op. 39, while Martinu's virtuosic and playful "Variations on a Slovak Theme" and the "Variations on a Theme by Rossini" demonstrate his characteristic rhythmic and lyrical style. The programme concludes with Chopin's "Introduction et Polonaise Brillante" in an arrangement for cello and piano. On this album, Nina Kotova is accompanied by her musical partner, Italian pianist Fabio Bidini.
