Dance heritage as fertile ground for endless playful experimentation Out of the triangular relationship between Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp emerges in the 1980s a generation of radical dance innovators. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wim Vandekeybus, Marc Vanrunxt, Alain Platel, Jan Fabre and many others gradually infiltrate Belgian theaters with their unconventional performances. In no time, they also flood the Netherlands, Europe and the rest of the world. That 'Flemish Wave' has profoundly influenced the way we look and dance, it turns out now, some forty years later. In A Wave, choreographer Zoë Demoustier takes stock. With about fifteen dancers – from Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, supplemented by young dancers, a dancer from Platform K and iconic dancers who created the pieces of old – she deconstructs monumental scenes from the 1980s and 1990s with an eye to the future. Together they explore what needs to be passed on and what could use an update. But most importantly: how references can be not a straitjacket but a source for dance pleasure and – who knows – a new wave.
