Dance Heritage as a Breeding Ground for Endless Playing Pleasure From the triangular relationship between Brussel, Gent and Antwerpen, a generation of radical dance innovators emerges in the 1980s. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wim Vandekeybus, Marc Vanrunxt, Alain Platel, Jan Fabre and many others gradually make their way into Belgian theaters with their unconventional productions. In no time, they also flood the Netherlands, Europe and the rest of the world. This 'Vlaamse Golf' has profoundly influenced the way we look and dance, it now appears, some forty years later. In A Wave, choreographer Zoë Demoustier takes stock. With around fifteen dancers – from Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, supplemented by young people, a dancer from Platform K and iconic dancers who created the pieces of old – she deconstructs monumental scenes from the 1980s and 1990s with an eye to the future. Together they explore what needs to be passed on and what could use an update. But above all: how references can be a source for dance pleasure rather than a straitjacket and – who knows – a new wave.
