Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent perform Bach's Mass in B minor. A monumental work in which counterpoint, expression and spiritual depth converge. Conscious of his historical position, the aging Bach devoted the last decade of his life to past and future. He established definitive versions of his most important works and worked on a grand, all-encompassing mass. The Mass in B minor thus became an exceptional synthesis: partly built from previously composed material, partly newly written, and a summum of his ability. Strict counterpoint and archaic forms stand alongside the most expressive, almost galant arias. Who could bring this monument to life better than Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Gent? For decades they have been among the most authoritative Bach interpreters. This gives this music a special resonance: just as Bach brings together his knowledge and mastery in his Mass in B minor, so too here sounds a lifetime of listening, searching and deepening engagement.
