The dark month of November is the ideal time to commemorate war and reflect on those we miss. And what offers more comfort than music? Antonín Dvořák knew this too, and with his moving Requiem he reaches straight to the heart. A subtle chromatic leitmotif reminds the listener of the omnipresence of death. Don't expect superficial gestures or melancholy. This requiem radiates a courageous sorrow that never becomes gloomy or tragic. Dvořák's greatest choral work is a relatively unknown gem. In the list of great requiems, it is sometimes unjustly overlooked. A few years ago, Philippe Herreweghe performed it together with Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Collegium Vocale. Once again they prove that Dvořák wrote the ultimate music of comfort.
