Mattias De Craene / Peter Verhelst – Zinay!

Zinay! by Mattias De Craene and Peter Verhelst: a ritual performance in which poetry and music merge. An incantatory litany about death and transformation, carried by sound, repetition and an intense journey through grief, beauty and hope. For poet Peter Verhelst, the word 'zinay' is a totem, an exclamation that both offers protection and creates space. It also became the key to his collaboration with musician and composer Mattias De Craene. Together they search for a shared language of word, sound and ritual. In 2017 they met during a poetry evening. What began as a conversation about music and language evolved into a shared practice. In Zinay! word and sound merge into one experience. Verhelst speaks an incantatory litany in which death is given a different name each time. De Craene's music unfolds as a landscape of pulsating sounds.
