Sam Comerford – Irish music meets improvised Jazz

Saxophonist Sam Comerford explores the Irish tradition in a hybrid between folk, improvisation and jazz. Fiddle, sax and live sampling create a layered soundscape in which acoustic and electronic textures merge. After his debut album Stillorgan (2020) with the trio Thunderblender, composer and saxophonist Sam Comerford returns to his roots in traditional Irish music. In March 2027 his first album in seven years will be released: heaven. Inspired by the innovative Dublin fiddler Tommie Potts (1912-1988), Comerford creates together with three closest musical partners a radical hybrid: the wild energy of the Irish tradition fused with contemporary improvised music and jazz. Fiddler Ultan O'Brien, from Ennis and deeply rooted in Irish music, brings an open ear and rich experience. Together with Hendrik Lasure and Jens Bouttery, he forms a new group sound. Bouttery exchanges his drum kit and bass synth for live sampling, in which he manipulates the group's playing in real time and plays it back - a subtle estrangement that simultaneously deepens and enriches the acoustic sound.
