Schumann's 'Rhinish'

In times of change, traditions are a foothold, a beacon of recognition, connection and group identity. Yet they can also lead to rigidity and exclusion. Not so with the great masters in this programme. They respect those conventions, and engage in dialogue with them. At the start of the international Beethoven year, the bridge-builder between the classical and romantic cannot be absent. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 is a groundbreaking work that begins with a restrained piano solo, a rarity in those times. Inspired by the Rhineland and German Romanticism, Schumann embraces the classical symphonic model with his Rheinische Symphony. And he breaks it open from within: simultaneously monumental, personal, warm and innovative. Past and imagination reinforce each other.
