In this final concert of the season of Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen at deSingel, the call of the summer holiday rings out: sunny sounds take you along, and we dream of journeys that broaden our horizons. Italian composer Sollima embodies the multicultural character of his birthplace Palermo. With its minimalist orientalism and echoes of all sorts of ethnic traditions from the Mediterranean region, Spasimo is an eclectic trip. In dialogue with soloist Ivan Karizna, warm cello sounds unfold that take you between citrus trees, jasmine and the salty harbour air. Palermo comes to life! Mendelssohn's Italian then takes us through the Italian countryside. The composer was barely 20 years old when he began writing the symphony during a European tour. Cheerfully, he takes you by the hand through the streets of Venetië, Rome, Firenze and Napels. Is your suitcase ready?
