Symphonie Fantastique

"The first psychedelic symphony in history," Leonard Bernstein thus described Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique. In five movements, Berlioz tells the story of a young artist who, tormented by hopeless love, takes opium. The effect: a hallucinatory trip full of visions, madness and despair. To give form to those inner turbulences, Berlioz treads uncharted paths. He plays with conventions only to end up with a revolutionary musical work. That same spirit of innovation resonates in Chairman Dances by John Adams and Belgian composer Wim Henderickx. Is this classical? Is it dance music? It is both! Henderickx's work is simultaneously an homage to, and a renewal of classical music.
