After his impressive Romeo + Julia, the Spanish top choreographer Marcos Morau returns to Opera Ballet Vlaanderen with a daring reinterpretation of The Sleeping Beauty. The centuries-old fairy tale becomes a disturbing allegory about our relationship with time. Not the awakening but the sleep itself takes center stage. What does beauty dream about while she sleeps? Which images, fears and desires populate that dream world? Marcos Morau redraws the fairy tale as a tumultuous, almost frenzied procession of enigmatic figures, driven by extreme physical intensity and breathtaking images. Contemporary composer Juan Cristóbal Saavedra enriches the romantic ballet composition by Tsjaikovski from 1890 with electronic sounds. The radical The Sleeping Beauty thus becomes a sensory experience that balances between dream and reality and that inevitably carries the viewer into a world that is as poetic as it is unsettling.
