Composer Thomas Ankersmit creates a fully analog live experience with modular synthesizers. Historical Serge systems and live improvisation merge into an immersive soundscape of physical resonance and spatial electronics. Based in Berlin, composer and musician Thomas Ankersmit (Shelter Press, Touch, PAN) has been working with the Serge Modular synthesizer for more than twenty years - an iconic analog instrument developed 50 years ago by Serge Tcherepnin. With The Tcherepnin Series, Ankersmit returns to the origins of this instrument. In 2025, he made recordings with large, historical Serge systems in studios around the world. Each of these rare configurations has its own character, shaped by its history and environment. The live performance brings these sound worlds together. Ankersmit improvises on his own Serge system and weaves that with carefully composed material that was recorded on the historical instruments. This creates a fully analog and immersive listening experience, balancing between physical sound, presence and imagined space.
