Christian Tetzlaff plays Dvorák The German violinist Christian Tetzlaff has been among the world's top violinists for decades. The Violin Concerto by Antonín Dvorák is one of his signature pieces. Dvorák composed it following the early successes of his Slavic Dances, for the great soloist Joseph Joachim, a violinist known for his artistic depth and intellectual approach. Dvorák therefore composed far more than virtuosic fireworks. Full of lyrical melodies, rich orchestral sound and rousing Czech folk music, he was able to merge the sublime and the everyday like no other. The Violin Concerto is not without reason a major favourite with audiences. From Dvorák's Czech atmosphere to Kodály's birthplace Galántá – once in Hungary, nowadays in Slovakia – is but a small step. The local folk music that Kodály himself notated in villages in the region plays a prominent role in this infectious music. Kodály was inspired by his older colleague Dvorák, but his music has an entirely distinctive style and sound.
