200000 In Sibyl, artist William Kentridge explores our desire to know the future. With live music, a short film, projections and nine performers, a chamber opera emerges about fate, uncertainty and the echo of the ancient sibyls. It is a desire of all times to want to know what the future brings. Already in antiquity, people visited the sibyls, prophetesses who could predict the future. That did not always go as hoped: if you asked the sibyl of Cumae a question, she would write the answer on an oak leaf and place it on a pile. If you wanted to read that oak leaf, the wind would blow the entire pile away. Your fate was known, but which one was yours, you could only guess. Inspired by that story, the renowned South African artist William Kentridge created Waiting for the Sibyl, a special chamber opera with live music by composers Nhlanhla Mahlangu and Kyle Shepherd. With projections, shadows and movements, nine performers explore the story of the sibyl and what it tells us about our relationship with fate, the future and uncertainty. The performance begins with a short film with live music, The Moment Has Gone, in which we see how Kentridge creates his animated film City Deep.
