Frits Celis (b.1929) is an indefatigable promoter of both performance and study of music by Flemish and Belgian composers of the 19th century, and the first half of the 20th century. As a composer Celis did not aspire to be a modernist trailblazer, but what he achieved as a composer, teacher, and conductor is certain to make his name indelible in the annals of Flemish and Belgian musical history. His oeuvre consists of compositions in all genres and for all kinds of forces including choral works, symphonic works, and chamber music, for which his preference has increased over the years.
