Alexander Ekman
Karl Wilhelm Alexander Ekman (Stockholm, 12 January 1984) is a Swedish dancer and choreographer. Ekman's choreographies are danced worldwide.
Alexander Ekman was born in 1984 in the Kista district in the west of the Swedish capital Stockholm. He studied as a teenager from 1994 to 2001 at the Operans Balettelevskola in Stockholm. At fifteen, he danced with Europa danse in France and discovered the work of many international choreographers there. That same year he was presenter of the Swedish radio programme Sommar. At sixteen, he began his professional dance career and joined the Royal Swedish Ballet. A year later he moved to the Netherlands where he danced with NDT 2 from 2002 to 2005, the company for young dancers of the Nederlands Dans Theater in Den Haag. There he also made his debut as a choreographer. He subsequently danced with the Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm in 2005-2006.
In 2008 Ekman collaborated with Swedish choreographer Mats Ek at the Stadstheater in Stockholm. He created video content there for the theatrical production Hållplats. In 2009 Ekman made the dance film 40 Meters Under with the Cullberg Ballet, which was shown, among other places, on Swedish television. In 2011 he taught for a time at the Juilliard School in New York. In 2012 Ekman began his collaboration with Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson.
