Annelies Van Parys

Annelies Van Parys (Brugge, 5 June 1975) is a Flemish composer.
Annelies Van Parys studied in Gent at the Koninklijk Conservatorium, piano with Johan Duijck and composition with Luc Brewaeys. She was awarded the prizes Vlaanderen/Quebeq in 2001, Jeugd en Muziek in 2004, gebroeders Darche in 2009 and became laureate of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België in 2011. In 2015 Van Parys received the Sabamprijs in the category Hedendaags Klassiek, and in 2019 she was able to receive the Klara Awards for composition and musician of the year. In 2024, her composition Shades of Light for cello and live electronics (2022) was performed as part of the ISCM World New Music Days on the Faeröer Islands.
The work of Annelies van Parys is performed at home and abroad. She writes both chamber music and work for large ensembles. As early as 2006 she composed her First Symphony: Carrillon. In 2018 she composed A War Requiem (for orchestra, choir and soloists) in connection with the commemoration of the end of the First World War. As composer in residence at Muziektheater Transparant she composed, among other things, the opera Private View and the chamber opera USHER, based on an unfinished opera by Claude Debussy on text by Edgar Allan Poe (2018, commissioned by Staatsoper Berlin and Folkoperan Stockholm). With Private View she won the first FEDORA – Rolf Liebermann Prize for Opera in 2014.
