Barry Douglas
Barry Douglas (Belfast, 23 April 1960) is a British (Northern Irish) pianist and conductor.
While growing up, Barry Douglas studied piano, cello, clarinet and organ. At sixteen, he took lessons from Felicitas LeWinter, who in turn was a student of Emil von Sauer. In London he studied for four years with John Barstow and received private lessons from Maria Curcio, a student of Artur Schnabel. He subsequently studied with Russian pianist Yevgeny Malinin in Paris. His recording debut was a recording of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in the piano version.
He won the gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986, the first non-Russian pianist since Van Cliburn in 1958. Earlier, in 1985, he won the bronze medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Texas and first prize at the Paloma O'Shea competition in Santander, Cantabria in Spain.
Barry Douglas received the OBE in 2002 for his services to music. He also received a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music, where he is 'Visiting Prince Consort Professor of Piano'. He received an honorary doctorate from Queens University Belfast and from the National University of Ireland.
He is artistic director of the International Piano Festival in Manchester and of the Clandeboye Festival in Clandeboye, County Down in Ireland. He is increasingly turning his attention to conducting. He founded the chamber orchestra Camerata Ireland in 1998.
