Iveta Apkalna
Iveta Apkalna (Rēzekne, 30 November 1976) is a Latvian pianist and organist.
Iveta Apkalna studied piano and organ at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in Riga and completed her education on both instruments with honors in 1999. In 1993, while still studying, she provided organ accompaniment at the church service during the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Basilica of Aglona in Eastern Latvia. In 1999-2000 she pursued further piano studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Between 2000 and 2003 she studied organ with Ludger Lohmann at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart.
Since then she has given organ concerts in many places around the world, sometimes together with an orchestra, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the WDR Sinfonieorchester or the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. She has also performed in the Netherlands. In Latvia itself she regularly plays the organ in the Riga Dom.
Her repertoire ranges from the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach through composers of the Romantic era to contemporary composers such as Philip Glass and Pēteris Vasks.
1997: Third prize at the international organ competition in Lahti, Finland.
1998: First prize at the North London Piano School Competition.
1999: Third prize at the International M.K. Čiurlionis Competition for organists in Vilnius, Lithuania.
