Martin Helmchen
Martin Alexander Helmchen (Berlin, 1982) is a German pianist.
Martin Helmchen took piano lessons for the first time at the age of six. He completed his piano studies at the Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler" in Berlin with Galina Iwanzowa and from 2001 onwards he studied at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover with Arie Vardi. He made his debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker at the Lucerne Festival with the piano concerto by Schumann under the direction of Valeri Gergiev. That same year he received the ECHO Klassik Award as "Young Artist of the Year" with cellist Danjulo Ishizaka for their CD with works by Mendelssohn, Franck and Britten.
Helmchen gave concerts with the Wiener Philharmoniker, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre National de Lyon. He performs mainly chamber music. He played together with Heinrich Schiff, Gidon Kremer, Christian Tetzlaff, Tabea Zimmermann, Juliane Banse, Julia Fischer, Sabine Meyer and Lars Vogt.
In 2007 and again in 2013 he recorded piano concertos by Mozart with the Nederlands Kamerorkest under the direction of Gordan Nikolić. His first solo CD with works by Schubert followed in the autumn of 2008. The year 2009 brought two more CDs: the piano concertos by Schumann and Dvořák with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and, together with clarinetist Sharon Kam and violinist Gustav Rivinius, chamber music by Brahms.
