Robin Verheyen

Robin Verheyen (Turnhout, 28 August 1983) is a Belgian saxophonist.
In 2008 he won the 'young talent' prize at the Gouden Djangos. That same year he received a Sabam award as best composer at Jazz Hoeilaart. He also won the Jong Jazztalent competition of the Gent Jazz Festival.
Verheyen studied in Belgium at the Lemmensinstituut, subsequently studied in the Netherlands and was a scholarship student ("Dean's list") for one year at the Manhattan School of Music before finally graduating in Amsterdam. Verheyen has lived in New York since 2007.

After graduating he moved to Paris in 2005 for a year to play in various jazz bands. At the same time he was a member of the Belgian band Saxkartel and co-founded the electronic band Orvalectiq.
In Paris he met Finnish pianist Aki Rissanen, with whom he performed both as a duo and as a trio (with drummer Markku Ounaskari as the third member). With Rissanen he recorded the album Semplice in 2009, the trio released the album Aleatoric in 2013.
Verheyen subsequently moved to New York in 2007, where he began playing and recording with the Pascal Niggenkemper Trio, and played in the bands of among others Letman-Burtinovic, Dan Loomis, Charnett Moffett, Jesse Stacken and Michael Bates.
Meanwhile he recorded two albums with the Belgian band Narcissus at W.E.R.F, and in 2008 he recorded the album Andarta with Grammy Award winner Roy Hargrove and the Roy Assaf/Eddy Khaimovich Quartet.
