Shunske Sato
Shunske Sato (佐藤 俊介, Satō Shunsuke, hiragana: さとう しゅんすけ), (Tokyo, 10 June 1984) is a Japanese classical and baroque violinist and conductor.
Sato began playing violin in his second year. He studied with Chin Kim, Dorothy DeLay and Masao Kawasaki at the Juilliard School, Jaime Laredo at the Curtis Institute, Gérard Poulet at the École Normale de Musique de Paris and Mary Utiger at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater München.
His concert career started at age twelve in the United States, after winning first prize at the Young Concert Artists competition in 1997. Following a highly successful debut recital in New York in 2000, in 2001 he became the youngest violist ever to perform Beethoven's violin concerto at the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, broadcast by Deutsche Welle. In 2007 Sato made recordings of solo viola sonatas written for him by Akira Nishimura. Sato was concertmaster at both Concerto Köln and the Dutch Bachvereniging. In 2018 he succeeded Jos van Veldhoven as artistic director of the Dutch Bachvereniging. In 2023 he stepped down to devote himself more to a more diverse repertoire.
His recordings encompass a broad repertoire, from Eugène Ysaÿe's Six Sonatas for solo violin, the complete sonatas for violin and piano by Edvard Grieg, the 12 Fantasias for solo violin by Georg Philipp Telemann, The Four Seasons Concerto Köln & Shunske Sato (Berlin Classics Germany) by Antonio Vivaldi.
