Terrence Malick
Terrence Malick (Waco (Texas), 30 November 1943) is an American film director and screenwriter.
Although he has made only seven films, Malick is praised for his unique style.
Malick created two classics in the 1970s: Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978). After that he disappeared from public view and working life for a long time until he made a sudden comeback in 1998 with The Thin Red Line, for which he received an Oscar nomination. He received his second Oscar nomination for The Tree of Life (2011).
Malick initially studied philosophy and translated Heidegger, with whom he also had a conversation.
Cinematically he began in 1969 with Lanton Mills, a short film he made as a student at the American Film Institute. His big breakthrough came in 1973, with the film Badlands starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek.
In 1978 came Days of Heaven with Richard Gere, and twenty years later came the Second World War meditation The Thin Red Line featuring Sean Penn, George Clooney, Woody Harrelson and John Travolta.
In 2005 The New World appeared, an interpretation of the story of John Smith and Pocahontas.
Then came The Tree of Life, one of the most ambitious and long-awaited films in cinema history.
The release of this film was delayed several times and took place in May 2011.
The film won the Golden Palm at the Cannes film festival.
