Herzog seeks details about his viola, stolen this morning in La-Teste-de-Buch.
Mathieu Herzog, the former violist of the Ébène Quartet, has reported that his viola was stolen on August 7, 2025 between 10 and 11 a.m. in La-Teste-de-Buch, France. Herzog's instrument is a viola by Charles Coquet, which Charles made especially for him in 2016. The case also contained a bow by Jean-François Raffin.
"Burglary alert. Yesterday, between 10 and 11 a.m., I became the victim of a break-in in La Teste-de-Buch. My viola, which is so dear to me, has been stolen", Herzog posted on Instagram. "If anyone has information or has seen anything unusual during this period, please contact me or the police. Thank you for your support and for sharing this message."
Herzog studied at the Conservatoire National de Région and the Conservatoire National de Région Boulogne-Billancourt. In 1999 he was a co-founder of the Quatuor Ebène. After leaving the quartet in 2014, Herzog began focusing on his career as a conductor. He has conducted the Verbier Youth Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre de Tours, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Korean Symphony Orchestra and the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2015 he founded the Orchestre Appassionato and is currently artistic director of the Festival de Glanum.
