In the 2022-23 season, the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest is in residence at the Philharmonie in Essen (Germany). The orchestra will perform three different symphonic programmes and will also present concerts by three different ensembles from the orchestra.
With three symphonic concerts and three chamber music concerts, the Concertgebouworkest opens the 2022/2023 season in residence at the Philharmonie in Essen. The special collaboration kicks off on 10 September with a festive programme under the direction of Alain Altinoglu. The soloists are the respective artists in residence of the orchestra and the Philharmonie: Swedish clarinetist Martin Fröst and Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, two unconventional soloists from the far north.
The programme full of energetic dance rhythms opens with John Adams' exuberant Short Ride in a Fast Machine. The Norwegian dances in the final section of Grieg's Piano Concerto anticipate the music after the interval: a mosaic of dances for clarinet and orchestra. And finally, full rein to Bernstein's radiant music from West Side Story, rightfully a crowd favourite.
On 27 January, Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the orchestra in Brahms's Fourth Symphony and the Second Piano Concerto with Stephen Hough as soloist. The following evening, Camerata RCO will present works by Brahms, Nielsen and Eisler in Essen.
On 15 April, the Concertgebouworkest is under the direction of Matthias Pintscher. Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin will come to life thanks to the lifelike dancing puppets of the Duda Paiva Company. Pintscher also conducts sections from Nina Senk's Concerto for Orchestra and two sections from his own cycle shirim. The final section is a newly commissioned work by the orchestra, with vocal contributions from the Nederlands Kamerkoor and Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans.
The following morning, on Sunday 16 April, the GoYa Quartet, consisting of string players from the Concertgebouworkest, will present music by Debussy, Webern and Grieg.
