Some time ago, a story circulated among young pianists about a colleague who - perhaps on the basis of a wager - had written a Scarlatti sonata, that is to say an imitation of a Scarlatti sonata.
The composer in question seemed so satisfied with his work that he presented it at piano competitions and even won prizes for the best interpretation of a Scarlatti sonata. Scarlatti left behind so many sonatas that it seems impossible even for specialists to know them all. The originality of Domenico Scarlatti's 15 sonatas, now recorded by pianist Maria Clementi, is beyond question.
