Fascinated by the folklore of his native Bohemia and gifted with an inexhaustible melodic inventiveness, Antonín Dvořák went through different creative periods in which he gradually freed himself from the classical model; the last of these periods was strongly influenced by the years he spent in the United States. His friendliness and optimism distinguish him from the other great Romantics, who have a darker and more tormented character, and contribute to the unique charm and accessibility of his music which has brought him so much popularity.
