A contemporary perspective on Beethoven
201 years after the premiere of Beethoven's iconic Ninth Symphony, Belgian composer Annelies Van Parys presents a new work, "Fantasie", offering a current reflection on his call for brotherhood. In a time when calls for armament and defense grow increasingly loud, Van Parys seeks the power of the individual against the masses. Her composition places Beethoven's masterpiece in a contemporary perspective and will have its world premiere during the Beethoven 9 concert series by Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen under the direction of Kristiina Poska, with the Ests Filharmonisch Kamerkoor and ensemble Revue Blanche.
Alle Menschen werden Brüder?
The inspiration for "Fantasie" stems from the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Van Parys integrates subtle references, including the famous phrase "Alle Menschen werden Brüder", ensuring the connection with Beethoven's work remains recognizable. While the symphony has long been regarded as a universal symbol of peace and solidarity, Beethoven's message is more urgent than ever today. In a Europe dominated by us-versus-them thinking and calls for armament, "Fantasie" poses the question of whether the individual can rise above the masses and resist the forces that fuel division and conflict.
Individual versus masses
Van Parys emphasizes this tension by having ensemble Revue Blanche, consisting of only four musicians, engage in dialogue with an imposing orchestra and choir. "It was essential for me to musically express the contrast between a small, vulnerable group and the overwhelming masses," the composer says. This concept reflects the daily tension between individuality and collectivism, with a solo ensemble taking on an impressive group of approximately 100 musicians and singers.
A hopeful message for the future
Like Beethoven, Van Parys wants to convey a hopeful message with "Fantasie". Together with writer Gaea Schoeters, she explored how we can continue to believe in a positive future without falling into naive utopias. The work ends with an open interpretation, allowing the audience to reflect on how brotherhood and individual strength can coexist in a world full of contradictions.
"Fantasie" invites the listener to contemplate the role of the individual in an increasingly loud society. Can one voice weigh against a collective? And how can we, despite our differences, build a future in which brotherhood remains more than a utopia? The premiere of this work promises to be a powerful, musical experience that stimulates reflection both aesthetically and intellectually.
