Explore the avant-garde spirit of New York City from the 1960s and 70s during Downtown New York, a unique event taking place from Thursday, January 18 through Saturday, January 20, 2024. During the 1960s and 70s, New York was home to a unique artistic climate that captured the imagination. The boundaries between conceptual art, music and performance blurred. Inspired by the experiments of John Cage, a music style emerged in the metropolis that set itself sharply against mainstream music culture and the modernism of the academic world. For its admirers, this new 'downtown' music movement was a beacon of cultural resistance. Less is more. For one weekend we focus on the music and legacy of protagonists such as John Cage, Morton Feldman, Terry Riley and especially Julius Eastman, in the presence of one of Eastman's closest collaborators Petr Kotik and his legendary S.E.M ensemble.
