In these live recordings it comes together almost perfectly: the colourful touch, the phenomenal articulation, the rhythmic precision and the expressively directional phrasings. Sokolov represents the most integrous form of music-making, without any artificiality or even a trace of imposed virtuosity. Tonal beauty is not consciously pursued but arises purely organically from a recipe worked out in every detail that nevertheless never impedes spontaneity. Routine is as foreign to him as exaggerated gesticulation.
For the 'purists' who have Purcell bound to their musical hearts, the transition from the harpsichord to Sokolov's constant companion, the Steinway D, may seem too great, but already after the first notes of A Ground in Gamut the magic emerges that makes this playing so irresistible.
From a stylistic point of view, one may certainly make reservations, for according to our current understanding, his playing, viewed from the perspective of historicizing performance practice, seems somewhat outdated. But who is not moved by Sokolov's elegant yet also vital approach to Mozart's Piano Sonata KV 333 and the deeply felt composedness of the Adagio KV 540? In the encores, a permanent feature, the enchantment is likewise not broken, with each additional piece embedded in its own completely unique expressive world full of imagination and atmosphere. The recording is a jewel, albeit with the caveat that the background noise from the audience comes equally clearly from the speakers. The applause has also been recorded.
