On 23 and 24 November, a special musical event is on the programme: the Kortrijks Symfonisch Orkest and the choir Vivente Voce present together "Schicksal", a concert in which "fate" is central. Under the direction of conductor Emilie De Voght and conductor Bart Van Beneden, the audience is taken on a moving musical journey. Actor Warre Borgmans provides the presentation of this special evening.
The title of the concert is taken from the Schicksalslied by Johannes Brahms, an emotionally charged work that forms the theme of the evening. This impressive piece will be framed by other masterworks from classical music. The concert opens with the opening chorus from the Mattheüspassie by Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most iconic works in Western music history.
In addition to these classical pillars, there are also works by two composers who died far too young on the programme: Lili Boulanger and André Devaere. Both composers died at a young age, but nevertheless left behind a lasting musical legacy. Especially for this occasion, conductor Bart Van Beneden has orchestrated the piano work Grave et Poignant by Devaere, a tribute to the Kortrijk composer.
The programme is further enriched with 6 Lieder op. 41 by Felix Mendelssohn, in which nature and human emotions are central. The choir and orchestra conclude the evening with Boulanger's rarely performed Vieille Prière Bouddhique, a spiritual work with a deep, meditative undertone. Before that, the first part of Franz Schubert's 'Unfinished' Symphony sounds, a work that, despite its name, is still regarded as a masterpiece in classical music.
