Classical on Sunday, or a wealth of ensembles that guide us through immortal repertoires of great masters. It is a long-standing tradition at Kursaal Oostende. We are therefore announcing the new season 22-23 with great pride. But with some melancholy, as the end of the Kursaal Classics series is approaching. As previously announced, Kursaal Oostende will be closed for a while due to renovation work. Before that happens, compositions by Verdi, Mahler and Beethoven will be on the music stands, brought to life by brilliant interpretations that bridge old and new times.
Kursaal Classics with grand orchestral offerings
"The Kursaal has a history and reputation to uphold," Mayor Bart Tommelein begins. "An offering of classical music concerts under the name 'Kursaal Classics' is therefore high on the agenda. Before the impressive renovations into a multifunctional hall begin, the Kursaal is pulling out all the stops with a series of six concerts. Belgium's most important orchestras are participating. And yes, you can never get enough of Mahler, Bruckner, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and their ilk."
Conductors with a passion for their métier
The six chief conductors taking the podium certainly deserve special mention: Michael Schønwandt, Dima Slobodeniouk, Gergely Madaras, Bart Van Reyn, Kristiina Poska and Michiel Delanghe. Leading musical figures from all corners, with a track record that extends beyond their own national borders. "A mix of different repertoires: from traditional classical through nostalgic melodic works to romantic showpieces. Now powerful and revolutionary, then playful or exciting," according to General Director Peter Craeymeersch.
Soloists with international acclaim
"The ensembles will again alternate this season with magnificent soloists. From Belgian soprano Liesbeth Devos and Dutch tenor Peter Gijsbertsen to America's most prominent baritone Thomas Hampson," mentions Associate Director Gwen Nys a few examples. "Violin masters include Augustin Hadelich and Spaniard Alberto Menchen. Two leading musicians of international stature. Just like concert pianist Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort," concludes curator Frank Pauwels.
