"It was as if I had found something I had always known, but forgotten or even lost. It was a musical rebirth." When Sebastian Bohren saw the great Ida Haendel play an incredibly virtuosic cadenza in Corelli's 'La Folia' variations on a YouTube video, which surpassed all traditional baroque versions, the spark jumped over to him. He developed an entire programme around the spirit of "La Folia", which inspired not only Corelli, but also composers as diverse as Marin Marais, Alessandro Scarlatti, Francesco Geminiani, Luigi Boccherini and even Rachmaninov. Sebastian Bohren went in search and found ever more pieces of comparable quality. Among the recordings are the 'Violin Sonata in A GT 2.A16', the so-called 'Pastorale (P.86)' by Guiseppe Tartini, arranged by Ottorino Respighi, and the 'Violin Sonata in G minor GT 2.g05', the work that Tartini heard in a dream and which went down in music history as the 'Devil's Trill Sonata'. On this album, Sebastian Bohren plays the piece for violin and strings in an arrangement by Ingolf Turban & Holger Frey and with the cadenza by Fritz Kreisler.
'Praeludium & Allegro' has a rather loose connection to 'Folia'. The piece is a variation on a Corelli theme in the style of Giuseppe Tartini. It was written in 1935 by Fritz Kreisler - which caused quite a scandal at the time, because until the true creator was revealed, these works were attributed to Tartini. The inclusion of the "Sicilienne" by Maria Theresia von Paradis in the programme, on the other hand, is a matter of the heart.
With Stringendo Zürich under the direction of Jens Lohmann and the CHAARTS Chamber Artists, Sebastian Bohren has experienced partners at his side. Lohmann was once his teacher, the CHAARTS Chamber Artists were already congenial partners in his Mozart concert recordings.
