"How can old and new enrich each other?" That is the intriguing question posed by the chamber choir Vox Mago in its spring production of 2025. On May 10 and 11, the choir invites the public to a surprising musical experience in which (neo)romantic soundscapes meet each other.
Central to the programme is the Missa Solemnis (2023) by Luc Feliers (°1968). This contemporary composition is a polyphonic masterpiece, rooted in the tradition of the Ordinarium of the Tridentine Mass. Feliers takes the listener on an emotional journey through a rich palette of harmonies, moods and spiritual reflection. His style is rooted in the past, but speaks a contemporary musical idiom, allowing the beauty of the human voice to fully shine through.
This contemporary Mass is alternated with Romantic repertoire from primarily British and American composers. The programme features works by, among others, William Boyce (1711–1779), Edward Elgar (1857–1934), Samuel Wesley (1766–1837), William Mathias (1934–1992) and Caleb Simper (1856–1942). Each of them offers a unique perspective on the development of Romantic choral music, with rich harmonies, lyrical melodies and a deep expressivity that characterizes the genre.
The combination of classical Romanticism and contemporary spirituality creates a compelling dialogue between different musical periods. Vox Mago thus creates more than a concert: it becomes an experience in which the listener is invited to reflect on continuity, renewal and the timeless power of vocal music.
