A new orchestra initiative is taking root in Brussels, giving young musicians a unique opportunity to perform and network with their peers. On 6 December 2024, the orchestra will present its debut concert at W-Hall in Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, with an exciting and varied programme.
The orchestra, consisting of conservatory students, recent graduates and advanced amateur musicians, aims to create a learning environment for musical development, while fostering a diverse community of music lovers.
Platform for Young Talent
The orchestra welcomes students from Brussels conservatories, universities and colleges, advanced students from music academies, and even ambitious amateurs who wish to join. It is an opportunity for these musicians to broaden their experience, work with a diverse repertoire, and take on mentoring roles. Rehearsals begin in November, with professional musicians and conservatory students not only performing, but also mentoring less experienced players.
"This is not just about making music; it's about building a community of like-minded musicians who want to share their passion for the art. We want to make classical music accessible and relevant to everyone, and our programme reflects this mission," says the founder and conductor, Simon Pu.
Diverse and Meaningful Programme The repertoire of the debut concert has been carefully curated to engage both musicians and audiences, combining well-known classical masterworks with pieces that carry social and historical significance. The programme will include:
- Symphony No. 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven
- Symphony No. 1 by Florence Price
- A selection from the "Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson" by Aaron Copland
By including works by historically underrepresented composers, the orchestra seeks to inspire the next generation of musicians, while offering a fresh experience to a broad audience.
Community Engagement and Broader Goals The orchestra's long-term vision includes expanding the programme with interdisciplinary projects, collaborations with cultural centres, and possibly a tour of Belgium in the coming years.
