The roots of the lute lie deep in antiquity. Depending on how one defines a lute, its ancestors can be dated back approximately 5000 years. This exceptional age has led to the development of numerous variants of this instrument, which are found in Europe and the Middle East, with common features and distinguishing characteristics. Nevertheless, the fortunes of the western lute have not been constant.
The lute is abundantly documented in the Middle Ages, but with structural features, playing techniques and purposes that clearly differ from those it would later assume. It was indeed during the Renaissance that the lute experienced its heyday. One could even say that the lute was the most important instrument of the Renaissance, especially with regard to performance as a solo instrument. The versatility of this instrument - it can play melodies, polyphony and harmony - qualified it not only as the most beloved instrument of that time, but also stimulated and encouraged the composition of many works, as well as the evolution of the musical language, styles and forms of that time itself.
