Louis Vierne was titular organist of the great Cavaillé-Coll organ at Notre-Dame in Paris for 37 years (from 1900 until his death in 1937) and was one of the greatest composers and improvisers of his time. In 1927 he appointed Maurice Duruflé as his assistant; the latter was later appointed titular organist of the Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris and retained this position for life. These two great French organists shared mutual respect and admiration until the tragic end, when Vierne died during a joint concert.
